Horror stories of preceptors belittling and humiliating students (and episodes of Grey’s Anatomy) filled my mind.
I was very confident in my test taking skills and my ability to pass exams, but was I prepared to translate this knowledge into practice? Did I know enough? Would I make a fool of myself?
Here’s what I quickly learned: Preceptors do not expect perfection from you, but rather a positive attitude and willingness to learn. If you show up with those two things, I can almost guarantee that you will have a positive experience.
I know you have high expectations for yourself, but you must remember, you are a student. You will draw a blank. You will not know the answer to every question. You will say the wrong thing. You will mess up. These things do not come as a shock to your preceptors.
I challenge you to hold yourself to a different set of standards. Show up each day with a smile on your face and a hunger for learning. Compensate for your lack of experience by expressing your interest, being a sponge, and responding appropriately to constructive criticism.
