If you’ve waited to apply for a job until it’s posted, it may be too late. Many positions are filled internally or via insider connections. If you want to be ahead of the game, you have to apply for positions that don’t exist.

My advice for new grads- BE FLEXIBLE. When it comes to applying online, apply to (almost) every opening you see. With that being said, if you decide apply for the jobs that don’t exist, you need to determine who your target is.

Put together a specific cover letter and resume for each specialty that you choose. This should include a persuasive cover letter highlighting your relevant experience and pertinent rotations. Plan your route, put on your business casual attire, and walk in there with confidence.
“Hi my name is ___. I’m a physician assistant. I have my resume that I’d like drop off to the hiring manager. Would you mind passing it along? Thank you!”

Reach out to your preceptors, professors, family, and friends. Utilize every contact that you have. Send a professional email with your general cover letter and resume attached.
“Hello! I’m seeking employment as a physician assistant in the ___ area. I’m most interested in ___, but I’m open to discussing any opportunities that you may be aware of. I’ve attached my cover letter and resume. I look forward to hearing back from you.”

Search for “city, state, specialty.” Click the person’s profile, ask to connect, and send them a personal message.
“I'm exploring opportunities for employment in the ___ area. I have completed a 4-week rotation in ___. *Any other pertinent info* I'd love to discuss any needs that you may have.”
I think you’ll be surprised how successful this method can be. It’s kind of like finding shadowing hours and being accepted to PA school… It only takes one YES! How many of you have you been offered a job that didn’t exist?
